ParticipantHi all, brand new to this and to ‘forums’ so hopefully it will all go according to plan! I brought my 1986 Virago 1100 a few years ago and with the help of a mate we stripped it down and had a load of re-chroming done. We rebuilt the bike and all seemed fine but the bike miss-fires and burns out the spark plug taking out one pot. I have replaced both plugs and checked the HT leads but i’m no mechanic and now really struggling to know what else to check. Does anyone have any ideas please? Many thanks and look forward to meeting up soon. Dave

ParticipantFirst thing that comes to mind is Valve clearance. Next possibly valve timing (if you have rebuilt the engine without being a mechanic). Although there could be numerous other reasons for a backfire (e.g. blocked jets, carb synch, or exhaust leak.) Probably bet to try and get a mechanic to look at it as it will be next to impossible trying to give advice without actually being with the bike and hearing at what stage she pops or being able to do a few checks.

ParticipantHi, many thanks for the reply. I think you are right, I should just bite the bullet and let a proper bike mechanic take a look I just don’t really want to spend too much more money on it. I started the bike this morning without any problems, it ticks over fine and ok up to about 2000 revs then after that it starts to cough and splutter! It’s a great bike and I’ve already spent quite a bit on re-chroming most of the engine and other shiny bits so I suppose a few quid more to get it running properly would be a good investment, and get it back on the road so I can get to some of the meetings and rallies. I live near Cheadle in Staffordshire does anyone know a good mechanic who won’t rip my eyes out please?
